Cet itinéraire de montagne du Grande Randonnée (GR) est le plus long et le plus difficile de ceux qui composent le réseau de sentiers du Gipuzkoa. Il relie Elgoibar à Hondarribia sur une distance équivalente à trois marathons. Elle traverse les cinq rivières les plus importantes (Deba, Urola, Oria, Leitzaran et Bidasoa) et plusieurs chaînes de montagnes (Karakate-Irukutzeta, ZEC Izarraitz, ZEC Ernio-Gazume, Adarra, Aiako Harria) à l'intérieur du territoire de Gipuzkoa. Ces caractéristiques expliquent le choix du nom : Mendi (montagne) et Ibai (rivière).
