The romeria in Zelatun, located on the slopes of Mount Hernio in the heart of Gipuzkoa, are a unique event that every year attracts locals and visitors to enjoy a day full of music, dance and a deep connection with Basque traditions.

AMeetingPlace:ZelatunandMountHernio

Zelatun is a place located between the valleys of Tolosaldea and Urola, right at the foot of Mount Hernio, one of the most emblematic peaks of Gipuzkoa. This environment, with its green landscape and spectacular views, becomes the perfect setting for the joyful romeria. Climbing Mount Hernio is, in itself, a rewarding experience, but doing so on pilgrimage days adds a cultural component that makes the day unforgettable.

El Hernio is known not only for its natural beauty, but also for being a meeting point for lovers of the mountains and Basque culture. During the Sundays of September, Zelatun comes alive with the romeria, which are a vibrant manifestation of local identity.

ThePilgrimage:Music,DanceandGoodAtmosphere

One of the most characteristic elements of these romerias is the music of the trikitixa, a style of music that unites the rhythm of the tambourine with a type of diatonic accordion that is an essential part of traditional Basque music. From early in the morning, the trikitilaris (trikitixa players) begin to play, filling the air with melodies that invite people to dance. Music is the heart of the romeria, creating a festive atmosphere that envelops everyone present.

In Zelatun, dancing is almost inevitable. Both young and old get carried away by the rhythm of the music, participating in traditional dances that have been passed down from generation to generation. The atmosphere is one of shared joy, where it doesn’t matter if you are an experienced dancer or a beginner; the important thing is to enjoy the moment and let yourself be carried away by the collective energy.

Fandango, arin-arin, porrusalda and trikitixa are danced loosely in a circle, the “kalejira” in a circle but holding hands and from time to time, to rest a little, a waltz, pasodoble or something to dance close together.
