Ausa - Gaztelu

The route takes us to the remains of the fortress at the top of Mount Ausa-Gaztelu, not far from the Larraitz recreation area, and takes us back to another bygone era. This construction, erected in the 13th century, was a lookout post on the border between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre.

According to archive documents, in those times the Navarrese herds grazed in Aralar and the Castilian forces would make incursions to seize them. From these posts, the horn was blown to warn them to gather the livestock and take them to safer places. Obviously, it is a place with a marvellous panoramic view.
