Guillermo Olmo sculpture Amezketa San Martin

The word "epai" has many meanings, among them: hill and cut. This great mountain route (GR) takes its name from both.

On the one hand, because it crosses several hills and, on the other, because in the border between Nafarroa and Gipuzkoa there are many communal mountains or epaipide, from where the inhabitants of the area obtained firewood (epaitza or epaice).

Between Lizarrusti and Hondarribia, the Aralar Nature Reserve, the Leitzaran Protected Biotope and the Aiako Harria Nature Reserve are crossed. In addition to Nafarroa, the path also runs through Iparralde.
