Elegance and history of a doline on the base on Hernio mountain

Born thanks to the merge of two villages in the heart of Gipuzkoa, Bidania and Goiatz. Located on a peculiar plain at an altitude of 500m, strategically joining the Oria and Urola valleys, thus its development and rich cultural and historical heritage. It’s made of majestic scattered farmhourses and green fields, creating an ideal image.

Other points
of interest

Bidania square

Includes some of the village’s most majestic buildings. The town hall buiding is very special, as it has tower shape. The upper part, made of bricks, and a large coat of arms in the main facade stand out. Next to it, in the cobble stoned main square, we can find Ana Palace, a mansion where many films ave been filmed.

Goiatz

There’s roughly 1km between Bidania’s square and Goiatz’s square. The medieval origin Asuncion church and the priest’s house are located here. The fronton court has a surprising feature, as the restaurant’s entrance door is on the fronton’s main wall. Another interesting building in the square is the beautiful Aldekoetxea farmhouse, perfect example of Basque architecture.

The former Caja de Ahorros Provincial

The road between Tolosa and Azpeitia is divided as it reaches Bidania-Goiatz. At that point there’s the former Caja de Ahorros Provincial (provincial savings bank) building, with a large Gipuzkoa coat of arms, reminding us that we’re on the centre of the province. The left road takes us through Goiatz to Urraki pass, while the right road it goes down the Errezil pass. Both roads have outstanding views of the Hernio massif.

Usarraga house

It used to house the Extraordinary Assembly of Gipuzkoa (Juntas Particulares de Gipuzkoa) between 1445 and 1700, which took place whenever there were unexpected problems or had to be celebrated outside of the General Assembly (Juntas Generales).

San Pedro chapel

On the outskirts of Bidania, on Elola neighbourhood, in the middle of nature, we can find this small 17th century chapel. Very close to it, on Sanpedroburu hill, we can find the remains of the former San Pedro de Iromendi chapel. Findings show us that a community lived here since the year 700. It’s one of Gipuzkoa’s most important Middle Age site.

Aizkomita and Trintxera passes

In two of the three road accesses we can find arched bridges: the oldest one, from 1890, is Trintxera bridge, on the road coming from Errezil. On the road coming from Tolosa there’s Aizkomita bridge, built in 1923.
