Tolosa is also famous for its sweets, some of them exclusively linked to the town. At the bakeries we can find all types of desserts: the traditional ones and the modern ones as a result of innovation, which wil surprise you.

At Tolosa’s bakeries you can find plenty of desserts: cakes, pies, chocolates, pastries… But the most popular ones are the following four:
Tejas&cigarrillos(Tilesandcigarettes)
Made with a butter and whole almond base, and covered with egg yolk and a pinch of lemon. Created by Luis Eceiza, from Eceiza bakery, upon Casa Julian carvery’s request, who needed a dessert to complete the T-bone steak menu.
Gorrotxas
Formerly known as Xaxu, these small cakes can be described as Basque macarons. A delicacy made of almonds, egg yolk and sugar.

Tolosa’s traditional bakeries
Tolosa has been the birthplace of renowned bakeries. There are som family bakeries that continue the tradition of making high quality dessert, passed through generations.
Eceiza
One of Tolosa’s oldest bakeries; opened in 1924. With two bakeries in Tolosa, Tejas & Cigarrillos (Tiles and Cigarettes) and Bombas (Bombs) are the most typical products, among others. You can have a hot chocolate in winter and artisan ice cream in summer.

Gorrotxategi Family’s 3rd and 4th generations create completely original and modern products. They have received numerous international awards. Besides having a chocolate museum they also organise different workshops. It also includes a museum, a cafe and and a shop in the workshop.
