Hernio-Gazume Special Conservation Area
Wonderful natural area with multiple options
The peak of Hernio is one of the most iconic places in Gipuzkoa, reason why it welcomes thousands of visitors throughout the year. The massif, formed by other stunning peaks and a protected natural enviroment, is full of history, traditions and legends.

Hernio-Gazume is a Special Conservation Area and part of the Red Natura 2000, due to its ecologic and scenic value, with plenty of caves and deep forests, where endangerend species live.
Hernio, Gipuzkoa’s viewpoint
Hernio’s peak (1,075m), topped by its impressive cross and many others around, offers an unrivaled 360º view. It can be seen from many places on the coast of Gipuzkoa, as well as some of the other iconic peaks in the Basque Country.
Romerias in Zelatun
Every Sunday in September romerias take place in Zelatun fields, bringing together thousands of people in a festive atmosphere, with trikitixa players included. There are two bars that offer snacks, also throughout the year. Going up, just below the Hernio peak, right before the last slope, there’s th tradition of passing throught some wrought iron hoops: legend says it helps keeping a good health.

Fagus Alkiza Interpretation Centre, located on the attic of Alkiza’s townhall, highlights the natural and cultural wealth of Hernio-Gazume Special Conservation Area, with displays focused on three main topics: nature, humans and culture.
DIfferent access points
Hernio massif stretches across three different regions, therefore there are many different options to visit it. In Tolosaldea in can be accessed through different points: Asteasu (Andazarrate), Larraul, Alkiza, Hernialde, Tolosa (from Aldaba and Urkizu), Albiztur and Bidania-Goiatz.

Gazume (998 m.)
On the other side of Zelatun, with stunning views.
Mendikute (803 m.)
On the top we can find the remains of a 11th-12th century former fortress from the Kingdom of Navarre. There’s also a cave nearby.
Intxur (765 m.)
With the remains of a defense enclosure from the Iron Age.
Erniozabal (1,018 m.)
With wonderful views of the sea and Tolosa. The way down to Tolosa passes through Lizarbakar, Lone Ash Tree, beloved place by locals.
