January 1, 2024 marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Eduardo Chillida, a universal artist of the 20th century.

The commemorative acts of the centenary of this prestigious artist will begin in 2023, promoted by the Eduardo Chillida – Pilar Belzunce Foundation.

In line with this celebration and on this very special anniversary, here you will find some brushstrokes of the mark that Chillida left in Tolosaldea.

TheLizardiwindow

This artist, especially known for the San Sebastián Wind Comb, placed one of his most emblematic sculptures of Gipuzkoa in the heart of Tolosa, next to the church of Santa Maria, the sculpture called “La ventana de Lizardi”. It is a sculpture in memory of the poet and Basque writer Xabier Lizardi, born in Zarautz, who lived and died in Tolosa. One of the main exponents of Basque poetry from the time before the civil war.

The holes in the steel sheet incorporate the void into the artwork and allow one to see through the artwork and go beyond it.

Artists like Koldobika Jauregi, from Alkizarra, who considers Chillida a master, have continued the Basque sculptural tradition started by Chillida and Oteiza. In fact, the artist from Alkiza received the Zabalaga grant Eduardo Chillida in 1990 and thanks to it he made a creative stay at the Insel Hombroich Museum in Germany. This experience was fundamental in his artistic and professional development.

Currently, you can visit the Urmara Museum in Alkiza, where the studio of Koldobika Jauregi is located. A unique museum-art space created and developed along with the artist Elena Cajaraville in a natural environment, on the slopes of Hernio.
