BE! Berastegi Shepherds’ Culture Week

The landscape of Berastegi has been created by sheep, a unique landscape, currently almost non-existent in Gipuzkoa.

But this landscape also has behind it the knowledge and know-how of the shepherd and shepherdess, a way of looking after the town and a culture around the sheep that we want to value.

Friday, March 28
2:30 PM. Presentation by Mayor Andoni Zuriarrain.
2:40 PM. Coffee and opening of the exhibition “Threads of Thought” with Kristina Meraki, an artist from Berastegi.
3:00 PM. Discussion: Are we what we are because we were, or will we be what we are? Young shepherds Iraitz Garaiburu and Oier Ugartemendia will answer questions from Josu Ozaita.
3:20 PM. Presentation: Sheep wool, waste or resource? By Joseba Sánchez.
3:40 PM. Young people, the present and future of shepherding; with Ane Gartziandia, from the Gomiztegi shepherding school.
4:00 PM. Interview with shepherd Aritz Ganboa: What are the keys to the future? Hosted by Eneko Maioz.
5:30 PM. Lunch open to all participants.

Saturday, March 29
9:30 AM. “Mondeju” course at the Urepele Society.
10:00 AM. Donkey ride to the Gorosmendi pastures accompanied by a flock of sheep, with Astotrek.
3:30 PM/4:30 PM/5:30 PM. Wool container-making workshop led by Kristina Meraki (3 shifts, 12 people at a time).
5:00 PM. Storytelling for children ages 2 to 8, led by Gazteleku.
6:00 PM. Guided cheese tasting led by the Ordizia Cheese Guild.

Sunday, March 30
11:00 AM/12:30 PM. Visit to the Gazpio cheese factory.
10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Pastoral culture tour. 2.5 kilometers and 10 zones: sheep zone, live “finish line” creation, donkey-led trails, exhibitions, sheepdog exhibition, sheep milking, sheep shearing, photocall, quick cheese tastings, workshops, ARTEile exhibition…
12:30-3:30 PM. Food fair.
1:30-3:00 PM. Live music.
