Be! Shepherds’ Culture Weekend
Read more
A weekend to delve into this world, held on March 28, 29, and 30 in Berastegi. Feel, live, and savor shepherding. Come and enjoy!
For the third time, the BE! Weekend will be held in Berastegi. A weekend to delve into the world of sheep, it welcomes many visitors from all over the Basque Country.
Two keys may be behind this success: on the one hand, it is organized from an innovative perspective.
On the other, it is organized with great care and enthusiasm by the town councils and residents, in close collaboration.
Sheep make Berastegi so green, so clean. We make the cheese together with the sheep, reflecting the character of these meadows in its flavor.
When you approach Berastegi, it is common to see sheep in the meadows, which are part of our town. In the municipality, with a population of 1,000, there are 6,000 sheep.
With this weekend, we want to highlight the sheep who live with us and share their world with you.
To achieve this, we will organize various activities over the course of three days.
Friday, March 28
"TheFutureinReflection"Conference
Rather than looking back, we want to engage in the exercise of looking forward. We can’t read the future, but we can imagine it, dream it… When we put the question on the table, we’ll get to work. We’ll internalize the question and reflect on it: mull over and ponder our ideas…
To do this, we’ll interview people from different fields: young shepherds, artists, researchers, experienced shepherds…
Young shepherds Iraitz Garaiburu and Oier Ugartemendia; researcher Joseba Sánchez; Ane Gartziandia, member of the Gomiztegi Shepherds’ School; shepherd Aritz Ganboa; and artist Cristina García.
Saturday, March 29
Living these experiences firsthand will take center stage. Have you ever made mondejus? Here’s your chance. Additionally, for one morning you can experience the lives of shepherds.
In the afternoon, there will be a wool-working class. Storytelling will also be included. And finally, the members of the Ordizia Cheese Guild will conduct a “Guided Cheese Tasting” while making a cheese live.

9:30 a.m.
Mondeju arose from ancient shepherding traditions. More than a century ago, when shepherds who had spent the summer with their sheep in the mountains came down to the farmhouses, they sought to take advantage of the sheep they were planning to retire from the flock. From there, they created mondejus to make the most of all parts of the sheep.
Unlike blood sausages, the mixture is bound with egg instead of blood. It is seasoned with pepper, and some people also use parsley.

10:00 a.m.
From the town square, we’ll head in a group with the donkeys to Gorosmendi pastures. Along the way, with the young shepherds Julen and Iker, we’ll gather the flock to take it to the mountains.
There, they’ll be herded into an enclosure. Along with this, two very experienced shepherds will show us the old-fashioned shepherding in Leitzaran, to tell us about its history, stories, and experiences.
