Cycle tourism in Tolosaldea

A region that lives cycling with passion

The mountainous landscape, together with the tranquility that is breathed in the whole environment, make Tolosaldea an ideal place to practice cycling. It is common to find dozens of cyclists on roads and mountain tracks, and there are many possibilities. We propose some of the most significant cycling routes.

Tolosako Azoka

Did you know that… Tolosaldea has been the birthplace of great professional cyclists?

Perhaps the most illustrious cyclist in the region is Abraham Olano, who was a two-time world champion, Olympic medalist and winner of dozens of races in grand tours. But the list is long: Leire Olaberria, Ainhoa Artolazabal, Jon Irisarri, Eukene Larrarte, Arantzazu Azpiroz… Delve into the land where they trained and began their career.

The only enduro track in Gipuzkoa

In Alegia there are four duly signposted MTB enduro routes to practice descents with the bicycle, with jumps, drops and cambers. They are the only approved routes in Gipuzkoa and are located on the slopes of Mount Intxur, near the Langaurre picnic area.

Two cycling routes with beautiful climbs

The rural roads of Tolosaldea, with little traffic, are ideal for cycling on the road. There are races such as the Tour of the Basque Country, or the Classics of San Sebastián, Ordizia or Aiztondo. We propose two routes to get to know these towns, and make beautiful climbs such as the Alto de Larraitz -an icon for cyclists- Alkiza or Altzo.

Tracks

Plazaola, 20 kilometers of track along the old railway path

The Plazaola greenway connects Gipuzkoa and Navarra following the course of the Leitzaran river. 22 of the 68 kilometers of track run between Andoain and Berastegi. It is a route suitable for all levels, and it has beautiful natural attractions along the way.

A bike trial circuit and another pump track

In Tolosaldea there are other options where you can practice your skills on wheels. Tolosa, for example, has an open trial circuit, next to the Usabal Sports Center, which has seen the growth of world champion Irene Caminos. In Villabona’s Otsabi Park there is also a ‘pump track’ circuit, ideal for the newest cyclists who want to experience the adrenaline of jumping and skidding with the bicycle.

15 more kilometers of bike path

Tolosaldea also has several sections of bike lanes that cross the entire region from north to south, from Asteasu to Ikaztegieta. As they are stretches with little unevenness, they are accessible to anyone. It is another way of getting to know various towns in the region.

Cycling races through Tolosaldea

Tolosaldea is a regular stopover for cycling races such as the Tour of the Basque Country, or the Classics of San Sebastián, Ordizia or Aiztondo. Also many other amateur category tests. But there are also popular tests that bring together a good number of cyclists.

The 2023 Tour de France... also passed through Tolosaldea!

The second stage of the 2023 Tour de France, which took place on July 2, crossed the region on its way to the finish line in San Sebastián. The peloton of the Grande Boucle crowned the heights of Larraitz and Alkiza, also passing through the center of Tolosa. An opportunity to see the best cyclists in the world up close.

Basque Country Tour

In the third stage of the Itzulia, the cyclists passed through Tolosaldea, where the stage also ended, specifically in Villabona (Hika Winery).

After ascending Andazarrate, they continued through Asteasu, passing through Villabona, Anoeta and Tolosa. They then went up Altzo and rode through Alegia, Amezketa and Abaltzisketa before heading up to Orendain. After ascending Altzo again, the cyclists set off for Villabona, passing through Tolosa and Anoeta. After Asteasu, Zizurkil and Aduna, they returned to Villabona to finish the stage. After climbing the last kilometre uphill, the third stage finished at the Hika Winery.
